I currently teach at Bedford School, one of the UK’s leading independent schools

I am a teacher at Bedford School, a leading Independent boys school, and have been a registered examiner for the Edexcel GCSE exam board.

I often work with students who have the ability but have either been neglected in their large class size or have lost confidence in English due to poor grades and lack of individual guidance.

Confidence plays a massive part in being able to be successful during the exam period and that is something I always instil in my pupils. I see myself as an exam coach, mentor, and older brother; personable, trustworthy and knowledgeable.

I believe that my job as a tutor is to:

• Teach
• Reinforce basic learning
• Mentor
• Coach

My students are so important to me - I'm careful to only take a number of students that I can fully give all my attention to and I do whatever it takes to not only get them the grades that they want/need but to exceed what they believe they are capable of.

Nick has completely transformed my son’s relationship with English.

He went from dreading the subject to genuinely enjoying it, and his confidence has grown immeasurably. Nick’s feedback is detailed, his teaching style is motivating, and he explains things in a way that finally makes sense. The results speak for themselves - from a predicted 5 to achieving an 8 in his GCSEs. We couldn’t recommend him highly enough.

Why My Tutoring Makes a Difference

Exam Coaching

Most students underperform not because they don't understand English, but because nobody has taught them how to actually get marks. I go deep on the mark scheme: what examiners reward, what they ignore, and exactly how to structure every answer. This is what I do in every session. It's also what schools, with 30 students per class and a packed curriculum, simply don't have time to do. That gap is where I come in.

Proper feedback. Every single week.

Written feedback in schools has got worse, not because teachers don't care, but because the workload is impossible. I know this firsthand: as a Head of Department I wrote nearly 200 reports every term. My tutoring directly counters this. Every week, your child completes targeted work between sessions. Every week, they receive clear, word-processed feedback with specific next steps. Not vague comments. Feedback they can actually improve from.

In a classroom of 30, teachers have to move forward whether every student is ready or not. In my sessions, we don't move on until I know the student understands, and until they feel confident. Every lesson is built around that individual student: their exam board, their weak spots, their target grade. Students also have access to me via Microsoft Teams between sessions, so help is never a week away when they need it most.

No moving on until they've got it

What this actually looks like in practice

Ethan came to me at the end of Year 10 with a Grade 1 in English Language. After a year of weekly online sessions, he achieved a Grade 5. That kind of improvement isn't unusual, it's what happens when a student finally understands how marks are awarded and receives consistent, structured feedback every week. Over 15 years and 100+ five-star reviews, the pattern is the same: students trust the process because they see their grades improve steadily, not suddenly.

My first teaching role was at Longsands College in St Neots, working across GCSE and A Level years. Alongside my teaching I reached the position of Lead Internal Verifier, reviewing and verifying other teachers' marked work before submission to exam boards. It's where I developed a forensic understanding of how examination marking actually works.

I took over a department at degree-level, affiliated with the University of Northampton. Starting with nothing, I built and delivered a complete three-year programme for students aged 16 and above, designing the curriculum, taking exams, and marking internal coursework. I also began running one-to-one feedback sessions on written work. That's where my instinct for individual coaching began.

My Teaching Journey

2014: Where it began

2016: Building something from nothing

2016: The tutoring journey begins

Starting slowly alongside my teaching career, I built my private tutoring practice over a decade into a top-rated profile on First Tutors, the UK's largest tutoring platform, accumulating over 100 five-star verified reviews. First Tutors has since closed unexpectedly, but every review is preserved here and reflects ten years of consistent results. Reaching that position is something I'm genuinely proud of.

2020: Bedford School

I joined Bedford School, one of the UK's leading independent schools, where I continue to teach today. Working within an institution that holds exceptionally high academic standards has sharpened everything I bring to my private students, high expectations, rigorous feedback, and a genuine care for every individual student's progress.
